Toyota releases all-new, higher-end minivan hybrid

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. on June 12 marketed in Japan a completely redesigned, higher-end minivan hybrid (in photo), whose mileage has improved to 20 kilometers per liter of gasoline, a fuel economy comparable to that of a compact car, thanks to use of a smaller motor and battery. The seven-seater, four-wheel-drive Estima G with a 2.4-liter engine also boasts better acceleration and sells for 4.41 million yen, about 500,000 yen more expensive than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles, Toyota Motor said.

Toyota releases hybrid version of Alphard minivan

NAGOYA, Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. on July 30 released the gasoline-electric hybrid version of its Alphard minivan introduced in May last year, Alphard Hybrid. The Alphard Hybrid features a system made up of a 2.4-liter high-efficiency gas engine, front motor and continuously variable transmission. The G Edition in the Alphard Hybrid series is priced at 4.12 million yen, about 1.1 million yen more than the gasoline version.

Nissan begins production of Paladin SUVs in China

TOKYO, Japan - Handout photo shows the Paladin sport-utility vehicle which Nissan Motor Co. has begun producing in Zhengzhou, China. Nissan said Feb. 28 that Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile Co. will start selling the vehicle March 29. The Paladin will come in two models -- the 2.4-liter XE grade and the 3.3-liter SE grade.

Mitsubishi Motors launches new SUV

TOKYO, Japan - Takashi Sonebe (L), president of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (MMC), and MMC Executive Vice President Rolf Eckrodt unveil the Airtrek, the company's new sports utility vehicle, on June 20 in Tokyo. The Airtrek, MMC's first new model in seven months, is available with a 2.4-liter or 2.0-liter engine and will go on sale in North America and Europe next year. It is priced between 1.70 million yen and 2.30 million yen.

MMC develops 1.8-liter GDI engine with turbocharger

TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (MMC) unveiled on July 3 a new model in the Parjero iO series of sport-utility vehicles equipped with a 1.8-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine combined with a turbocharger. The engine, claimed to be the first of its kind in the world, generates power equivalent to that of a 2.4-liter engine and allows smooth acceleration, MMC said.
